Burlington, Massachusetts: A Town of History and Growth

Burlington, Massachusetts, a town rich in history, was first settled in 1641 by English colonists. Originally part of Woburn, it became Woburn's Second Parish in 1730 before incorporation as the Town of Burlington on February 28, 1799. This settlement began as an agricultural community, selling crops like rye and hops to Boston, while also supporting small industries such as shoe-making and milling along Vine Brook. Burlington's history is visible in landmarks like the Francis Wyman House from 1666 and the United Church of Christ, built in 1732. The Burlington Agricultural Society, established in 1889, once organized significant cattle shows in Eastern Massachusetts. Today, the town honors its heritage while hosting modern community events in its public parks and cultural venues.

The mid-20th century marked a turning point in Burlington's development, driven by the construction of Route 128. This infrastructure project transformed the rural town into a hub for technology and industry, spurring rapid population growth during the 1950s and 1960s. The town's evolution is exemplified by the Burlington Mall, with over 150 stores. Burlington's expansion has involved significant infrastructure improvements, including concrete structures to support its growing population and business sector. From 74 homes in 1800, Burlington has grown substantially, with the 2020 census reporting a population of 26,377. This growth continues as Burlington establishes itself as a suburban industrial town, known for its tech and pharmaceutical sectors, contributing to local employment and home values.
